PROVERBALLY YOURS// Research

Over the last few days I have been collecting images from various blogs as inspiration for this brief, here are a few of the images which guided me:

This is a students design of a print class for graphics students. I'm not really interested in the content here but of the colour and effects used. I am considering using red and black for my designs and will probably incorporate some Photoshop masking effects also, so this caught my eye because my designs may come out as a similar style.

A poster for Hispanic heritage month,  inviting people to a salsa dance. I chose to post this image because it relies nearly totally on type alone to give a message. Despite this it looks remarkably decorative. I'm rather stuck on my 'type only' poster and this is the sort of work I need to find more of, to point me in the right direction.

This is a small experimental piece based on a song. Here it relates to the tireless work of the graphic designer, working around the clock but loving what he is doing. This is a fantastic example of text and image working together. Its also interjects humour and a simple range of colour, both aspects I would love to look into for this brief, unfortunately I have such a dark proverb...

University of Arizona Museum of Art exhibition poster. Again another style of typography only posters. I think I actually prefect this style to the Latin posters above, perhaps because of the inventiveness and originality. The whole poster is easy to read but is also interesting to look at. The 2011 snaking through the title changes the lettering almost making one 'I' to look like and exclamation mark.

Type and Image, This project was self initiated by the designer to curb the frustration caused by working for clients. He just wanted to make things he totally loved. This is a good example of type and image together with some comedy and originality. Again the designer chooses red and black on an off white stock which is a style I am looking at for this brief. However again the designer has added a worn effect to the poster, which I am undecided if I like or not. I think sometimes it can look tacky and forced.

'Free education for the people of Chile' is a poster for a socialist movement for free education. It has all the stereotypical socialistic design points. The raised fist, penetrating the circle of the establishment. I prefer to use of colour here also, they are deeper and more dramatic, however the content of the poster is less original, perhaps in its need to be utilitarian and simple.

Lyrics from a song by Cypress Hill. Here interesting typography is used in a simple experiment. This is the point where illustration meets type and for my project where image meets type. It should be interesting to try this style for my brief however I'm unsure if it would be classed as type or image. In terms of what I think about this work; I think it is a beautiful style when used in the right context, however it is hugely stylised, ensuring that at some point in the near future it will go out of fashion!
